Metro will give free bus rides to school-age children on weekdays
between 2 and 7 p.m. in Prince George's County starting Aug. 20,
the first day of public school in the county. Under the program,
approved yesterday by the Metro board, the county will reimburse
the transit agency $300,000 for rides on 82 Metrobus routes. The
program will run through June. Middle school- and high school-age
students must show a current school photo identification card. The
county is also providing free rides for school-age children on the
county-run system, TheBus. The program is aimed at encouraging transit
use and reducing the need for parents to drive children to after-school
events.
